My 10 Worst-Dressed from last night’s Golden Globes:

Whoever said “bad things happen to good people” was NOT kidding. Horrible dresses can happen to the most beautiful people. I will start with the acceptable ones first down to the ‘what was she thinking?!’

1. Michelle Williams in a blue velvet-patched leopard-print Jason Wu dress. I know this is a contender for most best-dressed lists but I am just not a big fan of this dress on her. Michelle Williams looks like the most beautiful woman in the world and and she has the talent to play the part that is why she won Best Actress in a musical for her performance in My Week with Marilyn. Marilyn would not approve of this dress had she been alive to this day. It is a beautiful dress for someone a little older but not for her. I want the old Michelle back, the glamorous rising star who showed up at the 2006 Oscars with then-husband Heath Ledger wearing a marigold Vera Wang creation looking like Old Hollywood. (photo here: http://www.marieclaire.com/cm/marieclaire/images/Ue/michelle-williams-vera-wang-large-new.jpg

2. Speaking of marigold, the beautiful Paula Patton arrived in a bright yellow dress that screams, “LOOK AT ME!” by Monique Lhullier, one of my favorite designers. I love the structure of the gown and the color works wonders on her caramel complexion but I would have liked this better and it would have even made it on my Top 10 Best Dressed if it was cinched more on her waist to show off her lovely figure. But what the heck, she looked happy in her dress!

3. The oh-so beautiful and very talented Natalie Portman showed up at the Golden Globes wearing a fuchsia Lanvin long gown with a maroon fold just above the bust. First of all, I do not like the maroon and fuchsia pairing. The fabric folds around her waist in an unflattering manner as if she has a bun in the oven and it looks a bit like a shiny wrapper. We have seen Natalie Portman in better gowns than this even when she really had a bun in the oven.

4. Freida Pinto, another lovely lovely lady, graced the red carpet in a cerulean princess-style Prada gown. It was age appropriate and it cinched her waist but I thought it was a little boring.

5. Mila Kunis in Christian Dior. Now this is a girl who proved she can wear color and she opted to go for a black and blah gown this time around? Do not get me wrong, she is a stunning girl and the Dior gown is equally stunning but I prefer not to put them together. One of my favorite red carpet looks from here was when she arrived at last year’s Golden Globes wearing a regal emerald Vera Wang gown. I also love her gold laurel cuffs. (See photo here: http://www.innewstoday.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Mila_Kunis_golden_globe_best_dressed.jpg) I was floored when she wore that romantic lavender chiffon and lace gown from the Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring 2011 Collection to the 2011 Academy Awards. (See photo here: http://data.whicdn.com/images/11886935/Mila-Kunis-in-Elie-Saab_large.jpg

6. I had mixed feelings the moment I saw Piper Perabo walked the red carpet in that sheer bone-colored Theyskens Theory gown. Initially I liked it, then they had to take a close up shot. The fabric was really sheer and perhaps because of the color, it looked a lot like a plastic bubble. Then she had to give all kinds of freaky faces and crazy poses on the red carpet while the photographers are busy shooting away. At that point, I just could not take it anymore. (Here is a photo to prove it: http://ph.cdn.photos.upi.com/view/03d7632662e8abf53a59e2b0185ca733/Piper-Perabo-arrives-at-the-69th-annual-Golden-Globe-Awards-in-Beverly-Hills-California.jpg)

7. Sarah Michelle Gellar showed up in a blue and white Monique Lhullier which, according to her, was hand-picked by her daughter. That explains it.

8. I love Zooey Deschanel but I just hate her in this dress! She is so quirky, young, and fun to even think of wearing something so serious and drab. This gown is for someone older. And do not get me started on the tuxedo nails.

9. Madonna in Reem Acra. Well, at least she left the bunny ears at home. http://www.shoeblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/madonna-louis-vuitton-met-gala-2009.jpg

10. Ladies and gents, we have a tie! Jessica Biel in Elie Saab and Amanda Peet in Marc Jacobs. Both incredibly stunning women in the creations of the world’s most sought-after designers and both looking rather matronly at the 2012 Golden Globes. Lay off the frou-frou for the next 10 years, ladies.

The 10 That Didn’t Quite Make My Best-Dressed List:

Not as drool-worthy as my first 10 but pretty dresses, nonetheless.

1. Socialite and fashionista Nicole Richie arrived in a sparkly metallic body-hugging Julien Macdonald gown. The V-shaped detail accentuated her hour-glass figure and for a petite young lady to wear something heavy, she nailed it.

2. Model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum wore a nude, neatly-tailored Calvin Klein dress paired with a turquoise Lorraine Schwartz necklace. It could have been perfection but the dress failed to show off her waist. But then again, she’s Heidi Klum! She would look absolutely stunning in anything!

3. Another ‘could-have-been-amazing dress’ was worn by another girl crush of mine, Naya Rivera. She donned a silky gray Vera Wang number that did not do her body justice. It could have been a killer dress if it was tailored to fit her and was neatly pressed before she wore it! The line down the middle was a bit off too. Admit it, she still looked AMAZING despite the boo-boos of her dress. I love how the red lips pop in contrast with the gray gown.

4. Elle Macpherson arrived at the Golden Globes in a blush Zac Posen strapless mermaid-tail gown. I saw a lot of nudes and blush on the red carpet and a lot of mermaid-tails too. A lot of people like this dress but it is a lot of frou for my taste and I have never been a fan of the winged bustier. She looks lovely, still.

5. Claire Danes, who was awarded Best Actress for her performance in Homeland, also won the hearts of fashionistas around the (golden) globe in her black and white J Mendel gown. Classy and conservative in front, the dress took us by surprise when she turned and revealed her sexy back adorned with sparkly jewels. It was a gown fit for a Best Actress.

6. Nicole Kidman is one of those highly-anticipated stars to grace the red carpet. Although she looked ravishing in a form-fitting bone-colored studded Versace long gown, we have seen more stunning red carpet looks from her. I will never forget Nicole Kidman in her red Balenciaga dress during the 2007 Oscars looking like a courtesan who probably goes by the name Satine. See photo here: http://images.mirror.co.uk/upl/m3/feb2007/8/7/027F8124-F3FD-4F10-A60C2E351C2B085F.jpg

7. Lea Michele looked like a diva in a metallic cut-out Marchesa number. I am not as wild about this though as with Dianna Agron’s swan cut-out Giles dress.

8. Emma Stone showed up at the Golden Globes wearing a wine-colored Lanvin dress. It was light and sheer, very feminine with fuchsia panels at the sides. The shoulder details and the eagle belt gave it an edgy vibe that is perfect for Emma Stone.

9. Evan Rachel Wood in an emerald-green and black Gucci Premiere gown. I am still undecided with this one. I applaud her for being so daring and edgy. I want to like it but it looks like a scaly reptile that, at any minute, could morph into a horrifying raven. It has scales, it has feathers, it is a halter, it is backless, it has a deep neckline, a mermaid tail, I could go on and on. Such is my dilemma with this gown.

10. Bérénice Bejo. I do not know her but apparently, she starred with Shannyn Sossamon and Heath Ledger in one of my favorite films, A Knight’s Tale. Oh I remember! She was the assistant and messenger of Jocelyn. Anyway, she stars in The Artist and she wore a cobalt blue Gucci gown that was very feminine and showed off her sexy collar.

My Top 10 Best-Dressed from Yesterday’s Golden Globes

1. Angelina Jolie looked ravishing and absolutely regal in an ivory silk Atelier Versace with a pop of bright red neck fold. She finished off the look with matching red lips and a red clutch. I might be a little biased as she is my biggest girl crush EVER but hey, no one can pull off this look as well as she can.

2. Sofia Vergara. Where do I start? This feisty latina amped up the sexy with a strapless body-hugging midnight blue mermaid tail Vera Wang gown. She was so much fun to watch during the interview and when they accepted the Best TV Comedy award for Modern Family.

3. Stacy Keibler proved she can hold her own in a stunning red Valentino number with a bow detail at the back.

4. Charlize Theron looked like a goddess in a blush Christian Dior Haute Couture. The deep-V neckline and the slit up to her thighs added punch to an otherwise simple gown. She wore her hair in a loose bun to the side and topped it off with a sparkly headband that mirrors the brooch detail in her gown.

5. Rooney Mara from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (which, by the way, I am dying to watch!) arrived in an elegant black Nina Ricci number with a deep neckline fastened only by bow details at the front. Not only does the dress fit her to a tee but it fits her edgy and mysterious personality as well.

6. Kate Beckinsale was a modern Cinderella in a strapless Roberto Cavalli gown. She paired it with an equally striking set of diamond cuffs and chandelier earrings that sparkled on the red carpet.

7. Salma Hayek epitomized Grecian goddess beauty in a black and gold Gucci gown. Her sexy tresses created a soft background for the long gold tassel earrings she wore. It was sexy and classy at the same time.

8. Dianna Agron made a bold choice to wear a bright red laser-cut swan Giles dress to the red carpet. She kept her hair and jewelry understated. She is young and daring and beautiful and I love her!

9. Jessica Alba looked youthful and radiant in a feminine thistle Gucci gown with a short train. Her diamond drop earrings echoed the beaded detail of the dress.

10. Reese Witherspoon looked classy in a strapless Zac Posen number that showed off her curves and finished off in a mermaid tail. Her style was effortless and she looked gorgeous.

"

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.
